01:18 pm - Argh
58% on the Sybex practise exam. Damn it!

*STRESS*

1. Winstall LE is better than ZAP files
- Zap files cannot be installed with elevated permissions

2. Underestimated a question I'd seen before, different Office transform files associated with different sites do provide localized dictionaries. Not a lack of knowledge, just didn't read the question properly. 3/4 for multiple choice

3. Security Configuration and Analysis. I need to find something for this. I was confused when going over the question and was shooting in the dark. What I got right:

Use Security Configuration and analysis for combining two security templates

1. Use Security Configuration and Analysis to import templates

2. Analyze Computer against database settings

3. Configure any settings not in the templates

4. Export the settings to a security database

I missed, out of the multiple choice, the secion on configuring. Everything else I got right.

4. Analyzing security configuration: Completely wrong
secedit.exe and Task scheduler, not AD Users and Computers or Security Configuration and Analysis

5. Not a big deal, just clicked an extra box

6. Tricky question about BIND.

7. No permissions for Organizational Units

8. I chose adding all 12,000 accounts to one global distribution groups. The recommended solution is to nest three distribution groups into one Universal group to cut replication traffic.

9. Backups question, full and then incremental

10. Requirments for SMTP replication:
At least two sites
At least two domains

11. Do not use Movetree if in same domain

12. Stupid question about subnetting I probably will not get on the exam.

13. Auditing DNS: Partial credit, answer is Query and Questions, not Query and TCP (TCP might duplicate apparently.)

14. Slow link detection for software deployment

15. Check for Inherit Permissions if delegated admin is unable to manage a newly moved account.

16. Share printers from 2000 system

17. If DNS server doesn't support dynamic updates, dcpromo wizard will prompt to install

18. Ocfiles is built in file security template

19. Only account auditing (partially correct again, these are going to kill me.)

20. Only one GPO since Internet access is enabled by default.

21. Zap files do pretty much nothing

22. Only necessary to create connection link, do not specify bridgehead

Topics:

Integrating DNS with the Active Directory
Installing and Configuring the Active Directory
Active Directory Optimization and Reliability
Configuring Sites and Managing Replication
Installing and Managing Trees and Forests

ARGH

12:04 pm - The Rules for Onsite Jobs
1. Never, ever take for granted that the room or office will be available to you. Most non technical staff believe that you are magical and that you will look at the computer and it will be setup.

2. Most businesses that require onsite work are out in the middle of nowhere.

3. Put everything in writing. Every. Little. Thing.

4. Keep all receipts, bitches are going to pay.

5. NEVER talk money with your client.

6. Make sure you have made alternative arrangements for lunch.

7. Never shout on your mobile phone in the smoking area

8. Practise not swearing the day before

This list brought to you by silly, silly people and a random French class.

09:41 am - Damn it, Janet
I tried to ask for help on the Office setup newsgroup, to no avail. One of the MVPs (god I hate that) has said that Office 2003 doesn't have the functionality to automate the registration process. I think I'm going to dig a little further and see if it's possible to write a VBScript for XP activation. If it is, I'll do it and post it here.

05:19 pm - of secondary concern are
Integrating DNS with the Active Directory
Installing and Managing Trees and Forests
(not such a problem)
Configuring Sites and Managing Replication

Bleah. At least I'm ok with RIS.

05:17 pm - Automating Office 2003 installations and more 70-217
Absolutely no studying done this weekend unfortunately.

I seem to have narrowed down my problem areas for 70-217. They are:

1. Installing and Configuring the Active Directory
2. Creating and Managing Organizational Units
3. Active Directory Security

Found some free resources on the web as well:

1. http://www.windowsitlibrary.com/Content/594/toc.html
2. http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/advanced/help/default.asp?url=/windows2000/en/advanced/help/sag_adintro_19.htm
3. http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/advanced/help/default.asp?url=/windows2000/en/advanced/help/sag_adintro_19.htm

Thus far I've been unable to locate any scripts or advice for automating Office 2003 installs. Hopefully someone has come up with something!

01:04 pm - Seeing ghosts
So, the first work related post....

I'm going about my building images business to discover that when Ghost begins sending data to a client PC, it keels over. I've checked the following thus far:

1. Disk corruption (via gdisk and fdisk)
2. Network cable
3. Rebooted the sending server

I'm now trying to image it with Altiris. Unfortunately, our boot disk is hanging in a very irritating fashion right where it's trying to execute the VLM (drive mapping.)

Two options here, either the mini switch is throwing something that the client doesn't like or the network card is bein' funny.

12:59 pm - Change in direction
After much thought and some useful advice from Mel, this is turning into a 'professional' blog. By professional, I mean projects and technical information. Notifications about updates to Lockergnome and other sites I may write for will be here as well as work/study related things. Hence the new layout. Decided that perhaps red and black wasn't the best for a professional blog.

09:47 am - Holy Shit
LONDON (Reuters) - Traces of the anti-depressant Prozac have been found in Britain's drinking water supply, setting off alarm bells with environmentalists concerned about potentially toxic effects.

The Observer newspaper said Sunday that a report by the government's environment watchdog found Prozac was building up in river systems and groundwater used for drinking supplies.

The exact quantity of Prozac in the drinking water was unknown, but the Environment Agency's report concluded Prozac could be potentially toxic in the water table.
